Why Pine Is Our Favorite Winter Scent (and How to Bring It Home)
Share
There is something about the scent of pine that makes a house feel ready for winter. It is crisp and green, woodsy, and it brings the outdoors in just when the days get shorter and everyone starts spending more time at home. Pine has become one of our most-loved scents!
What goes into our Pine Soy Candle?

Our Hand-poured Soy Candle in Pine is made in small batches in Vermont with a short list of ingredients. Each one starts with 100% natural soy wax, is scented with pine essential oil, and is lit with an all-cotton, unbleached, lead-free wick. It contains no paraffin, no phthalates, and no synthetic dyes. The scent comes from the essential oil itself, so it smells like real pine. Each candle holds 4 ounces and offers up to 20 hours of burn time, and it comes in a glass vessel you can reuse or recycle once the candle is finished.
How do you make a soy candle burn its best?
A little care at the start helps a soy candle burn evenly and last longer.
Let the first burn go long enough.
The first time you light your candle, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the glass, which usually takes an hour or two. This helps prevent tunneling, where the wick burns straight down and leaves wax stranded on the sides.
Keep burns to about four hours.
After that, blow it out, let the wax set, and trim the wick before the next use.
Watch for drafts.
Open windows, fans, and heating vents can make a flame flicker and burn unevenly, so a calm spot works best.
What can you do with the jar afterward?
Once the candle is finished, let any leftover wax cool completely, then pop it out with a butter knife or set the jar in warm water to loosen it. Wash the glass with warm, soapy water and it is ready for a new life holding cotton rounds, hair ties, matches, paper clips, or a small succulent on the windowsill.
Do you have other ideas for what to do with the jar? We'd love to hear them!
Where else will you find pine at Ballou?
If you love the candle, pine carries through a few other favorites, which makes it easy to build a small ritual around one scent.

Whipped Magnesium Butter in Pine is made for bedtime. Work it into legs, shoulders, and feet while the candle burns, and let the scent carry you into the evening.

Cold Pressed Soap Bar in Pine brings the same fresh, green scent to the sink or shower. It really is divine!
